Diogenes the Cynic for Visualeyez Festival
This performance was curated by Todd Janes and presented for Visualeyez Performance Art Festival by Latitude 53 in Edmonton, Canada.
Diogenes the Cynic is a series of three performances based on the historical anecdotes of Diogenes of Sinope. Active in the third century BC, Diogenes was a philosopher who examined the pursuit of humanity. In these performances, French aims is to pay homage to his cosmopolitan lore by reenacting the historical accounts of Diogenes amidst the streets of Edmonton, Canada. Emulating the ‘dog life’ French resides in a barrel, resembles Diogenes’ seedy appearance, carries a staff and a lantern, doing as him: mocking passersby, residing outside, defacing currency, and quoting his infamous citations as a gesture of remembrance.
